Purpose
What excites me about data is the ability it offers to inform better decision making.
The dashboard in your car is valueable in that it can indicate when you need to slow down or refuel.
In the same way the value of a business dashboard is only as great as its power to indicate, for example, the need to invest more in Google ads, staff training or your disengaged customers aged 35-45.
And following from that, a machine learning model that identifies customers at risk of churn is only useful if a meaningful intervention can be put into action.
I get excited about the opportunity to source raw business data and turn it into actionable insights because many of the tools available today are so powerful and fast.
What was impossible or impractical in the past can now be relatively trivial.
The challenge is that many of us working with data have noticed that putting these tools and processes together can take hard work and diligence so that we can tell credible and compelling stories with data.
This is what I see as my purpose, to continue to put in the effort to update my skills and implement the processes that lead to success.
I have been priviliged to learn about and tell stories with data from a range of industries so far including, Finance, Digital marketing, HR, Engineering, Transport, and Health.
As for the results, I am lucky to be able to give examples including defects and wasteful spending identified and prevented as well as processes automated allowing teams to move focus from BAU tasks to meaningful change and many more.
